Tenzing Chogyal Sherpa focuses on understanding Himalayan snowpacks, their hydrological responses to global warming, their associated climate feedbacks, and the implications of these changes for regional water security.

Before starting his PhD, he worked for nearly eight years at ICIMOD, an intergovernmental organization based in Nepal. His work there centered on monitoring, quantifying, and understanding cryospheric change across the Hindu Kush Himalaya through field-based measurements, remote sensing analyses, and numerical modelling. Over the years, he led and conducted numerous glacio-hydrological expeditions and geophysical surveys throughout the Nepal Himalayas. Some of his key field campaigns include the annual mass-balance expeditions to Rikha Samba Glacier; the National Geographic and Rolex Everest Expedition (2019), which installed one of the world’s highest AWS stations; the EverDrill project, which involved drilling over 150 meters into the Khumbu Glacier; and the expedition to Lower Barun Glacial Lake in Nepal.
