The new major project “MountAInWater” has been granted. MountAInWater is led by the Institute of Science and Technology Austria and funded by Schmidt Sciences through the Virtual Institute for Earth’s Water programme. The Mountain Hydrology Group at Utrecht University contributes to process understanding in the Himalaya region and to the assessment of downstream impacts of changing mountain water resources.
Walter Immerzeel and Philip Kraaijenbrink are involved in the MountAInWater project. Together with Prof. Francesca Pellicciotti from ISTA, Walter is responsible for the scientific coordination. The project will examine in great detail how the water cycle in high mountain regions has changed, and how shifts in glaciers, snow, groundwater and evaporation have contributed to this. The team will use AI to accelerate complex simulations and will conduct fieldwork in the Himalayas, the Pamirs, the Canadian Rockies and the Andes.
Immerzeel: ‘This funding enables us to expand our research team with two PhD candidates and a postdoctoral researcher. We will also travel to the Himalayas to collect and analyse data.’
